Antenatal Screening

Once you have completed our maternity registration form a member of our team will contact you to arrange your booking visit. The booking visit is your first appointment at the hospital and generally takes place during weeks 8 – 14 of your pregnancy. There is currently only one entrance open into the hospital, the main entrance. All other entrances are closed. As soon as you enter you will be faced with a hand sanitiser station. We ask you to follow the advice displayed on how to use the hand sanitiser.

Pregnancy scans

Obstetric ultrasound, also known as prenatal or pregnancy ultrasound, uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of a developing embryo or fetus. Your doctor will use information from obstetric ultrasounds to track pregnancy progress, gestational age and help predict delivery dates. During an obstetric ultrasound, you will be on a bed, usually on your back. You may be asked to change position during your scan.

For most mums-to-be, this is their first scan (NICE , Newson ). You’ll only have a scan.

It is important that you see a Midwife as early as possible in your pregnancy. Women have their first and longest Antenatal appointment between 6 – 12 weeks of pregnancy with their Midwife. This is called a “booking” visit and involves questions about your health, any illnesses or previous pregnancies. This helps us to see if there may be any possible problems during your pregnancy and allows us to tailor your Antenatal care for your specific needs.

At the start of your pregnancy, during your booking visit, your Midwife will make an assessment based on your previous and current medical and pregnancy history. If you have not had any problems, then the Midwife will state that you are low risk and will be suitable for Midwifery-led care. This means that you will have all of your Antenatal care provided by the Midwife, and you will only need to attend the hospital for routine scan appointments.

You will not see an Obstetrician unless a problem arises. During your pregnancy we will continuously assess you and your baby to ensure that we provide the appropriate care for you and your baby. At or around 36 weeks the Midwife will discuss your birth plan with you and complete a Risk Assessment to check that your pregnancy has been uneventful.

If you and the Midwife are happy, then they will state that you are low risk and will give you the contact details for the Midwifery-led Unit to call when you are in labour.

How much does dating scan cost?

Skip to content. During your pregnancy you will usually have between seven and ten antenatal appointments depending on whether it is your first pregnancy. Women with complicated pregnancies or who are expecting multiple babies may need additional appointments.

At your first booking appointment your community midwife will discuss and offer you a range of screening tests, the tests include blood tests and ultrasound scans of your baby. We ask that you come with a full bladder for this scan as it usually allows us to get the best possible picture of the baby. If you decide to go ahead with this optional screening test you will be offered a scan between 12 weeks and 13 weeks 6 days ideally 12 weeks. This is the only time that this scan can be performed. We send these measurements to LabPlus in Auckland where a blood sample from you is also sent.

LabPlus then calculate the risk or chance that your pregnancy is affected with Down Syndrome. Because this calculation is not carried out on site we are not able to give you the results straight away on the day. LabPlus will contact your midwife with the results and she will discuss the results with you. This is a detailed ultrasound scan, usually carried out when you are 20 weeks pregnant.

So whilst a normal 20 week scan is very reassuring it cannot guarantee a healthy baby. This scan usually takes around 30 minutes although it can take longer if the baby is in a difficult position or if a problem is detected. The quality of the pictures we get depend on a number of factors including the position of the baby, the position, shape and structure of your womb, maternal BMI and the gestation of the pregnancy. If for any of the reasons listed above we are unable to complete our checks on your baby we will arrange a follow up scan for you.
