Several theoretical studies on the anthropological understanding of respect appear to limit the topic to traditional African women respecting their in-laws and husbands. Vilakazi states that when an umakoti brand new wife serves her apprenticeship with her mother-in-law, she is very closely watched and taught the culture of the family into which she marries. She has to hlonipha her in-laws, i. The bride avoids addressing her parents-in-law directly, avoids looking them directly in the face and even when referring to them she uses a particular hlonipha vocabulary. As a stranger in her husband’s family it often takes years before she is fully incorporated. Certain rituals may be performed in the course of time after marriage to mark this process of incorporation. A woman who has borne a number of children, especially sons, is eventually fully accepted in her husband’s family.
African Tribes, African Traditions & Cultures of Africa
When Shaka became chief of the Zulus in , the tribe numbered fewer than 1, and was among the smaller of the hundreds of other tribes in southern Africa. However, Shaka proved a brilliant military organizer, forming well-commanded regiments and arming his warriors with assegais, a new type of long-bladed, short spear that was easy to wield and deadly.
The Zulus rapidly conquered neighboring tribes, incorporating the survivors into their ranks.
African courtship and engagement begin with complex pre-wedding rituals. Family harmony is central to the indigenous tribal villages scattered.
The Nguni represent nearly two thirds of South Africa’s Black population and can be divided into four distinct groups; the Northern and Central Nguni the Zulu-speaking peoples , the Southern Nguni the Xhosa-speaking peoples , the Swazi people from Swaziland and adjacent areas, and the Ndebele people of the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. Archaeological evidence shows that the Bantu-speaking groups, that were the ancestors of the Nguni, migrated down from East Africa as early as the eleventh century – see South Africa’s general history timeline.
The Zulu language, of which there are variations, is part of the Nguni language group. The word Zulu means “Sky” and according to oral history, Zulu was the name of the ancestor who founded the Zulu royal line in about The largest urban concentration of Zulu people is in the Gauteng Province, and in the corridor of Pietermaritzburg and Durban. Cultural practices of the Zulu ethnic group on the body and their influence on body donation. Anatomical Sciences Education IF 3. Thus, most African countries continue to rely on unclaimed bodies for dissection programs, or bequests from the white population. The latter situation is dominant in South African medical schools. Since South Africa is multi-cultural with nine main ethnic groups of the Black African population, it is important to seek the reasons behind lack of participation in body donation.
This report represents a move in this direction with its qualitative study of the cultural practices of the Zulu ethnic group in the province of KwaZulu-Natal from the perspective of a variety of participants, with emphasis on their treatment of the human body after death. Four themes emerged from interviews: 1 Death is not the end; 2 Effect of belief in ancestors; 3 Significance of rituals and customs carried out on human tissue; and 4 Burial as the only method of body disposal.
Each of these themes is discussed in relation to the likelihood of body donation being seen by Zulus as an acceptable practice. It is concluded that this is unlikely, on account of the need to preserve the linkage between the physical human body and the spirit of the deceased person, and the perceived ongoing relationship between the spirit of the dead and the living.
In view of these conclusions, a number of options are canvassed about the manner in which anatomists in KwaZulu-Natal might obtain bodies for dissection. These possibilities have implications for anatomists working in comparable cultural contexts.
For many people, the Zulu are the best-known African people. Their military exploits led to the rise of a great kingdom that was feared for a long time over much of the African continent. They have a royal line that can be traced back to Shaka, the king of the Zulu during the 19th century. Shaka built his kingdom from small tribes that resided in what is today the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal. The Zulu are the descendants of Nguni-speaking people. Their written history can be traced back to the 14th century, when they migrated southward from the east to settle in what is now South Africa.
